Rediscovering Christmas
Advent 2019
Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe was the Son of God. In other words, Jesus was the incarnation of God, the Savior of the World. The Western church celebrates Christmas on December 25. The Eastern church celebrates Christmas on January 7. Christmas and Easter are the two major holidays of the Christian faith. Christmas is celebrated by billions of Christians around the world. In our time, Christmas is celebrated by many non-believers, too.
Christmas has been called the most wonderful time of the year. It may be. It is a time to decorate your home with bright lights and Christmas trees. It is a time to play holiday music. It is a time to watch Christmas movies. It is a time to make and eat Christmas cookies. It is a time to attend Christmas parties and send Christmas cards. It is a time to give and receive Christmas presents. It is a time to gather with family and friends. Each one of these things is innocent, but together there is a danger. It is easy to get so involved with Christmas activities that we forget the true meaning of Christmas. This sermon series is designed to remind you of the true purpose of Christmas.
Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, the Savior of the World. Someone once wrote, “If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.” Those words still hold true.
In this sermon series, Rediscovering Christmas, we are going to look at the purpose of Christmas. I will begin this five-part sermon series on First Sunday of Advent, December 1. In each message, we will uncover one more reason Christmas is the best time of year. I hope you plan to be with us.
In His Service,
Russ Adams
