Noah: The True Story

The Bible and Hollywood have always made an odd partnership. The Bible is the word of God, which exists for the edification of your soul. Hollywood, on the other hand, exists to make a profit by entertainment. Yet, some of the greatest movies ever made have been Biblical in nature. In 1949, Cecil B. DeMille produced and directed Samson and Delilah, which won two academy Awards and grossed approximately $11 million dollars, a large sum for the year. In 1959, DeMille returned to direct The Ten Commandments, starring Charlton Heston as Moses. It is an annual Holy Week classic. I have seen it countless times. Many consider 1985’s King David, starring Richard Gere, a classic as well.

Earlier this year, Hollywood released another Biblical movie, Noah, starring Russell Crowe. I will confess I have never seen the movie, but I have been bombarded with questions about it. Everyone wants to know two things. First, they want to know if Noah is a historical character. The only thing that matters is that Jesus believed he was historical. The Master mentioned him in Matthew 24:37. Second, everyone wants to know if it is biblically accurate? You can answer that question for yourself. All you have to do is read the Bible. His story is found in Genesis 6-9. The Bible always trumps Hollywood.

For this reason, I have decided to spend three weeks with Noah. Beginning on Rally Day, September 14, I will be examining what the Bible says about Noah. Below, you will find my tentative preaching schedule. I have divided his story into three sections. The first week, we will look at Noah’s world. Many have compared his world to ours. The second week, we will look at the flood and how God preserved mankind. During the final message, we will look at God’s covenant with Noah.

I hope you take the time to read and study the passages for yourself.May God bless us as we look at the true story of Noah together.                           Russ
